I love bags, if I had lots of money I would buy hundreds. As it is I don't have lots of money so I tend to get one bag and use it until it falls apart. River Island is where I usually go becuase they are reliable and fashionable but a little bit quirky but if I could I would have one or ALL of these:
The Mulberry Alexa my queen of bags
Lulu Guiness lips clutch (probably in fuschia snakeskin but if we're dreaming why not one in every colour)
Modalu Pippa again not sure exactly what colour I'd go for there are so many lush shades available
What would your dream bag be?
And while we are on the subject of things I want here is a list of more affordable wishes: Blusher - benefit/Top - motel rocks/Dress - miss selfridge/Bag - bag that style-ebay
Its my birthday on the 24th maybe I will be lucky ;)
At Judy's Affordable vintage fair I got a lovely yellow polka dot dress from Maggies Dress (where I got my jumper at Blind Lemon) and a white clutch bag from a stall selling Nylon Sky jewellery.
I already own a similar clutch I got from a charity shop a few years ago and have almost destroyed through use! oops!
The labels in both bags say 'Shilton International' Im sure they are from the 80s. A quick search threw up a lot of Jane Shilton bags which is a UK brand that still exists today so I think it may be of this brand.
The white one I bought yesterday and is in much better condition and looks to be newer than the one I already owned (looking at the inside of the bag the lining and label seem to be more modern)
I want to show you the vintage clothes I havent yet photographed so I am going to get my boyfriend to take some for me soon. I havent even photographed my fur coat for you yet and Ive had that since November!!
I went to The Blind Lemon Vintage Fair at the weekend and one thing that stood out a lot was the selection of tapestry bags.
They have come back in fashion recently with quite a few versions on the high street and I love them!
Here are a selection from the high street and some vintage numbers I have found online: My favourite from the high street and most similar to the original vintage styles, lovely framed bag with pretty floral image, bargain at £12.99 from New Look, perfect for a night out!
Great size for everyday use, work or university. Pretty tan and light coloured tapestry. £36.99 River Island.
cute dinky frame purse, for all your coins. £10.00 Topshop
Beautiful framed bag with chain (a common handle for vintage tapestry bags) Pretty embroidery pattern. £54 My Vintage www.myvintage.co.uk
Fantastic 1950s handbag from www.steptoesantiques.co.uk £53.00 but worth every penny!
Another 1950s bag this time from www.myvintage.co.uk . £45 unusual shape and mix of colours in this one.
Last but not least from www.devoted2vintage.co.uk £42 lovely rigid form handbag again 1950s.
If these examples are out of your price range at this time of the month (they are to me!)I would recommend trying a local vintage fair. With the popularity of tapestry bags right now, there are a lot about for reasonable prices and if you are there with the seller face to face you can bargain the price also!
Expect a post soon on my vintage fair purchases, I have lost my camera battery charger so no photos at the moment.
I was looking at the Lulu Guiness website the other day as she has just celebrated 20years of her handbag business. I really want one of her lip clutch bags they are wonderful :P
I noticed whilst browsing that she had made some bags with lobster patterns on them. This instantly reminded me of Dahli's lobster telephone and his collaborations with Elsa Schiaparelli. (bags by Lulu Guiness)
Dali's Lobster Telephone One of schiaparelli and Dali's collaborations.
I then read the interview with Lulu on her website http://www.luluguinness.com/lulu_guinness_interview.php
and found that Elsa Schiaparelli was one of Lulu's influences. It all made sense now. Elsa Shiaparelli (1890 - 1973)
Schiaparelli was at the height of her career during the inter war years, unfortunately her style was not as popular after WW2 which left room for designerslike Dior to take over with new styles Dior's style was very fitted with cinched waists and took full advantage of the end of the war by using more fabrics which had been on shortage previously.(note the longer skirt)
Shiaparelli's work was greatly influenced by the surrealist movement having met Man Ray and Duchamp and then collaborated with Salvador Dali and Alberto Giacometti. Shiaparelli's outfits were worn by the likes of Mae West, Joan Crawford and Daisy Fellowes (heiress to the Singer sewing machine company). Elsa used crazy prints of banal objects and introduced visible colourful zips to clothing. One of her dresses even had visible rib cage and spine applique. Marlene Dietrich (German Actress)
I love the tailored suit jackets with the padded shoulders and intricate embroidery. By 1932 Shiaparelli was employing 400 people including some of the best tailors around which made her wacky designs a reality. and the detailing of the red jackets sleeve
I really love the shape of the pockets on the front as well.
Another designer working at the same time was Coco Chanel. The boigraphical (is that a word) of her life is coming out soon starring Audrey Tautou as Coco. I would really like to see the film as the trailer looks wonderful! Chanel managed to survive the changes after the war and as you know the brand is still around today. here is the trailor:
I think they should make a film about Elsa as well. that is all for now :) bye x
