Boardwalk Empire

Saturday night tv is getting really good right now, I have The Tudors and Boardwalk Empire to watch!

Sky Atlantic channel is showing Boardwalk empire. Set in Atlantic City in the 1920s at the start of prohibition. It is both glamorous and violent showing the harsh realities of the time. Even after studying this era at Alevels I forget that life in the USA was very different to that of Briatain at the same time, despite both America and Britain recovering from the first world war, and racial equality still not around. In America women had not yet received the vote and obviously the liquer ban gave rise to much gang related crime.

The acting is superb and the costumes and set (my favourite parts) are wonderful also. The women all have quite long hair still as it is early in the decade and the silhouettes of the poorer characters clothes are very much in the edwardian style. The numerous main characters have intertwining storylines and the gap between the social classes is shown wonderfully.

Starring Steve Buscemi as Enock Thompson, Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody and Kelly Macdonald as Margaret Schroeder (my favourite character).

If you like Road to Perdition or Band of Brothers or The Sopranos this is a show for you.

I was impressed with the effort my friends went to with costumes, they all looked fabulous!

1920s birthday!

Had my birthday night out last night, the 1920s theme was a hit!

I havent been through all the photos yet but this is a picture of my hair from the back.


pincurl style, took me ages to get all my hair up, its very long at the moment!

i have a better picture of my disney princess cake for my next post as well.

22nd Birthday

Its my birthday on the 24th of this month and if youve read my blog for a while you might know I always have a themed party.

Well tis year due to the size of my flat we will be forced to go out dancing and drinking rather than have a party at home. There will be a theme though and its my favourite one yet!

Roaring Twenties!

Due to lack of money until after the date, Im wearing a flapper dress I already own, however I have been browsing the web for inspiration still.
Here are some of my favourite picture finds:

I watched silent movie 'It' (1927) today starring Clara Bow, Antonio Moreno and William Austin

Bow plays a savvy shop girl who falls in love with her new boss and uses her charm to try and win his heart.

Elinor Glyn the author the genius behind the story wrote:

It: "self-confidence and indifference as to whether you are pleasing of not"

'It' used to describe sex appeal brought about the term 'It girl' of which Clara Bow was made the first. It's easy to see why Clara was Chosen just look at this adorable still form the film

I loved all the clothes, even her shopgirl uniform! I like her headscarf when she is on the boat, her cloche hat with grapes and her t-bar shoes.

Worth watching for: the scene where Clara cuts up her uniform, the jokes on the worded screens and Clara Bow herself!

Polyvore

Ive seen a few examples of outfits made in Polyvore so I had a go myself.

Art Deco Architecture

I've mentioned before how much I love the Hoover building however if your visiting London, it is a bit out of the way. I found this list of Art Deco buildings on the V&A website.

click on the spots on the map and it will give you a picture, there are a lot in central London so its worth having a look.


I love the old theatres and cinemas and I would love to stay the weekend in Claridges it looks incredible!

Not on the map, but just as wonderful are some of the London Underground tube stations many of them were built in the 1930s.

Pandora

Tatty Devine have also embraced the flapper look. Tatty Devine make beautiful acrylic jewellery. The must have from this seasons collection is 'Pandora' I think she was modelled on Louise Brooks because of the trademark bob with fringe and of course Brooks starred in the film 'Pandora's Box' in 1929.

Art Deco Elegance

I love adorning each one of my coats and jackets and sometimes even a hat, with a brooch that says something about me. If you love Art Deco then you will love these.

1920s Fashion video

This was posted on the Queens of vintage homepage and I just loved it so much!
I would give anythng for a 1920s wardrobe, I think its so classy and practical, but totally fun and lighthearted at the same time.

Holly Fulton

I recently discovered up and coming fashion designer Holly Fulton. I was immediatley drawn to her use of vivid block colours.

'I have a huge love of art deco and Bauhaus styles, cubist fashion and the geometry within all these genres and the re-interpretation of these into contemporary materials gives me huge inspiration' Holly Fulton

Fulton's designs represent Art Deco well, the garments are modern and the adornment of crystals and studs add a luxurious feel which is synomynous with the 1920s and 30s. Geometric shapes and patterns on sleek but structured silhouettes resemble Deco architecture such as the Chrysler building .

The accessories also compliment the look well, overlarge beads and bibs are very tribal in style and the exoctic was a great influnece in the beginning of the last century. The perspex and metals of the jewellery play off on the sheen of the PVC, silk and patent leather.

Some of her new pieces will be worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the new Sex and the City movie.

I must admitt though, I'm not a fan of the fake eyebrows! :P

Vintage Dress up

This is my 1970s Miss Selfridge day dress, it belonged to my mother and then she gave it to me because it doesnt fit her anymore and it just hangs sad and alone in her wardrobe.I like the style, it is a 1970s dress but it has the look of the 1940s about it.My face looked kind of silly so I cropped it out haha


My mum has a few more of her old clothes but she (like many others) thought the 80s would never be back in fashion so chucked most of her stuff away!

I love this dress because its good quality, at the beginnings of the highstreet store when the clothes were all made in England and workers were paid a fair price. How times have changed in just over 40 years!
This dress has a beautiful floral pattern.

Im no good at recreating hairstyles despite the books and tutorials Ive got/watched, so forgive my cheats pageboy look and quiffy thing. I need more practice!

My shoes were from Peacocks ages ago i love them! I wear them so often I had to get them re-heeled! I like the t-bar shoes because A) I can walk in them with ease no matter the hieght of the shoe and B) they are reminiscent of the 1920s my favourite era :)

Barbie

Ive not posted in so long now I cant remember what I've been doing!
So i will just mention the Barbie Exhibition I saw on holiday.

So I went to Majorca for a week in August and I was delighted to stumble across a Barbie exhibition! (in truth I have never grown up and still get excited by Barbie dolls and other wonderful girly stuff).
The exhibition was on the top floor of Palma's El Court des Ingles (a big department store). Barbie it seems is 50 this year! Congrats Barbie! So she got her own celebratory show. (this is me all over excited)

I like how in this box they used the young dolls to make Jane and Micheal that was such a good idea!
