VICTORY! ...rolls

I am currently quite pleased with myself after managing my first sucessful victory rolls!

I have often tried in vain with much frustration. They could be a LOT neater but nevermind practise makes perfect!

Cringey photo so just focus on the hair.
Photobucket

If I was actually going somewhere I would probably curl the ends of my hair as well.

I have a lot of whispy 'baby hair' around my fringe area any ideas how to grow? tame? style? it?

If you are interested in vintage hairstyles here was my last attempt I posted

http://domesticblogess.blogspot.com/2011/03/1940s-hairstyle.html

(I don't know whats worse on that post the different cringey face I'm pulling or the fact I have the same cardi on, you may have noticed, I'm not cool)

and if you would like me to try some more hairstyles and post them let me know!

Im wearing my lovely vintage knit cardi that I got from the Blind Lemon vintage fair. My dress is from Dorothy Perkins its a lovely dress perfect for summer and reminds me of the dresses little victorian girls wore with their thick black tights and ankle boots. I tried to find a picture from the 1993 film Secret Garden to give an example because I know the girl wears a dress just like it, but nowhere had any stills.

I have a weeks holiday so Ive come back home to Coventry. I have internet here so expect a few catch up posts! at last!

Vintage Finds!

So I found my camera charger (fairly soon after I started looking properly).

I promised a post about my vintage finds from the Blind Lemon Vintage fair:

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Ive wanted a pair of sheer black gloves for ages but normally the vintage ones are super tiny and I havent found any to fit! I was lucky this time and saw these pair for a wonderful £3.50! I was sure Id got inspiration for them from Bette Davis in the film in All about Eve (1950) but now I'm not so sure where I saw them. Its a cracking film by the way if you get chance to see it! Bette is wonderful at her role as the diva Margo. I also loved the supporting role played by Celeste Holme as Margos kind and levelheaded friend Karen, she was beautiful! Marilyn Monroe has a bit part also.Photobucket

This next one was also a bit of luck. There were a lot of vintage leather suitcases on sale this time but on in particular caught my eye. It had my initials painted on it! I couldnt let that pass me by! It is in fairly good condition just a couple of bashes to the corners which you would expect on a old used case. I want to know who it belonged to now! £25 it cost me.PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

I also got a cute knitted short sleeve jumper top very 1940s in style but I doubt its that old. Its currently hanging out to dry so I will get a photo of it for you soon.

1940s Bash

I am so glad that the Blind Lemon Vintage fair is coming to Cardiff again on 6th of this month.

Because in April, I have this to go too!

We are going for my friends Birthday, she lives nearby so me and my friends will drive down and stay the weekend and go to this event.

I really want a genuine 1940s dress, nothing elaborate just an everyday dress will be lovely. So hopefully I can pick one up at the fair.

I cannot wait to do my hair either, I dont know which style yet but Ive been gathering inspiration and where better than from:

for a Betty Grable look, it is a possibility! Photobucket
I could do a good Veronica Lake, but thats super glamorous.Photobucket
Katharine Hepburn is probably more a style I will try.

I have a lot of hair to work with as you can see! my fringe has grown out since that picture as well. All advantages for 1940s dress, unlike the 1920s theme I picked! I used about 50 hair pins that night!

Silk Spectre

I watched Watchmen again the other day.
Just incase you havent seen the film, the Silk Spectre character is a super hero in the 1940s and the mother of one of the main characters.
Photobucket

Although I don't like her character very much I do like her hair :)
Photobucket
She has great pinup potential. Plus she wears my favourite colour, YELLOW!
Think I may need to dress up as her for some fancy dress occasion.

pin up style

I love the cheeky pin up style of the 1940s and 50s. I think its because they're naughty but nice.

Gil Elvgren images are so much fun.
Photobucket
I love the pastel hues and the coy faces the girls pull.

I also like the themes that run through a lot of pin up art and photography like 'cowgirl' 'housewife' 'sailorgirl' 'motorist'
Photobucket

Its something that has been done again and again in pop culture. Here are my favourite examples:

CandyMan by Christina Aguilera. Christina made the perfect pin-up and I loved all the videos from her album 'Back to Basics' I want her stylist!!

here are some beautiful photos of her as a 1940s sweetheart.
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
this last one is my favourite, I love her 1930s style hair and the glamorous floor length dress.

A more recent example would be the comic relief video for 'Just can't get enough' by The Saturdays.
Photobucket
They go through sailor, cowgirl, girlfriend, housewife, cheerleader and more all in one video!

look out for Fleur de Guerre, Bernie Dexter and Zoe Scarlett.

The Lady Is Willing

So the other day I bought a Marlene Dietrich boxset, and ive finally got round to watching one of the films. I have never done a film review before so yeah, this will be very sketchy and i hope to improve with each review i write. I chose The lady is willing mainly because of the description on the back of the box. Marlene is fabulously funny as eccentric actress Elizabeth Madden who finds a baby and decides to keep it, she enters into a 'practical' marriage with a doctor so that she is legally allowed to adopt the baby. Fred McMurray makes a good leading man, he plays his character very well however i find his character itself lacking in some way he isnt a strong man until maybe the last scene he is often over shadowed by Lizas huge character. But there are lots of great characters in the film who all add a lot of humor (Granted a lot of the jokes come from Miss Madden's mad wardrobe). I liked the 'manager and accountant' characters played by Stanley Ridges and Arline Judge and the exasperation and adoration they show for Liza. I found the climax at the end is kind of unexpected but fitting :)
I really enjoyed the film and would recommend it to any Dietrich fan or general fan of good old fashioned hollywood movies. I cant wait to watch another form my boxset when i get the chance! The storyline is not dissimilar to Baby Boom the 1987 film starring Diane Keaton, however this 1940s gem is much better.
Ive included a movie poster and a screen shot from google here to give you a tatser.
